From creating bubble nets, jumping about 45-50 feet out of the water, imitating human speech, and sleeping standing up whales are amazing creatures that everyone loves to watch.
Besides their amazing qualities, at the top of the food chain, whales play an important role in the overall health of the marine environment. For some whales like the Blue whale, they can consume as much as 40 million krills per day helping to regulate the flow of food in our oceans.
But did you know that despite the whale's amazing qualities and their contributions to the ecosystem of the ocean, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services has listed the Blue, Sei and Finback whales in the Endangered list. Commercial whaling in the 1800 and early 1900 has significantly reduced the population of these endangered whales. Other contributors are ship strikes, pollution and climate change.
Let's help save our whales from extinction by bringing about awareness and educate others about what's happening to whales, avoid products with PCBs and plastics, be a part of a local environmental group and volunteer your time and use eco-friendly cleaning products (all drains lead to the ocean)
